Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) is a high performance polymer which is almost chemically inert, only being attacked under extreme conditions by molten alkali metals and certain fluorine compounds.
PTFE materials are suitable for a wide range of temperatures from cryogenic to 260°C and have excellent insulating capabilities and high dielectric properties. In this respect PTFE is a very successful gasket material.
General Properties of Virgin PTFE
Outstanding chemical resistance
Suitable for use with foodstuffs and pharmaceutical applications
Insoluble in solvents, even at increased temperature
Stable to light
Does not absorb water
Excellent electrical insulating capacity
Low thermal conductivity
Aggressive or toxic fluids
Gaskets and seals
Valve seats / shaft seals
Bearing pads / slide bearings
